A 0% balance transfer credit card is one that allows you to move other debt onto the card without paying any interest for a set period of time. Most balance transfer offers will not charge you any interest for either six or 12 months. After that, the card’s regular APR interest rate applies to any remaining balance.

There are several ways to take advantage of these offers. The most common use is to transfer high interest rate debt from other credit cards. By replacing a credit card balance charging interest with one that offers no interest, one can save a substantial amount of money. In some cases, you can use a balance transfer to pay off debt other than credit cards. And finally, some simply invest the money in a savings account to earn interest, and then pay the credit card offer in full when the introductory rate expires.

This last option is known as balance transfer arbitrage. The idea is simple. Rather than paying off a high interest balance, deposit the “free” money into a savings account during the 0% introductory period. Before the intro period expires, withdraw the money, pay off the card, and pocket the interest. Today, balance transfer arbitraging has become a lot less common for one very important reason–balance transfer fees.

A balance transfer fee is the cost credit card companies charge to transfer a balance onto the card. A few years ago you could find offers that did not charge a fee. Today, all balance transfer offers charge a fee that typically ranges from 3% to 5% of the amount transferred. While this still makes most 0% balance transfers a good deal, it is important to recognize that a fee will be charged.
