New Rotating Categories for the Discover it™ Card

Spring fever is officially upon us which means the DIY’ers are earger to take on their home improvement projects. Luckily, there is a way to save yourself a few bucks. You can earn 5% cash back on your Home Improvement purchases this quarter with the Discover IT™. Here are all the details for the offer:

5% Cash Back

From April through June you will get 5% back on your home improvement store purchases. The 5% back is on up to $1,500 in purchases, which totals $75 in bonus cash. Now, that might now sound like much, but that’s free money which makes it worth your while.

There are a few things to keep in mind. First, in order to be eligible for the 5% cash back offer you MUST register. You can do this by logging into your online account. Remember you have to register each time the categories change in order to get the 5%.

1% Cash Back

Keep in mind you always earn 1% cash back on all your other purchase. That means any purchases that fall outside the 5% categories or purchases that exceed the amount you can earn in the 5% categories will still net you 1% cash back.

Chase Freedom 5% Categories


With each new quarter we get to look forward to new rotating categories for the Chase Freedom cards. Each quarter the 5% categories change so it’s important you stay up-to-date on what the changes are. Before we get to the categories let’s first review how the 5% cash back works.

Here’s a quick overview:

  • You earn 5% in categories that change each quarter.
  • Earn 1% on everything else outside of the rotating categories.

You’ll earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 spent each quarter. This is equivalent to $75 of free money. Each quarter the categories in which you can earn the 5% change, but regardless of category, you always get 5% back. Keep in mind, you always earn a full 1% cash back on all your other purchases that fall outside of the categories. After you spend $1,500 in the rotating categories you then start earning 1%.

Here are the 5% rotating categories for January – March 2013:

  • gas stations
  • drugstores
  • Starbucks® stores

In order to be eligible you must register. This will allow you to get the 5% back for your gas and restaurant purchases. If you don’t register then you don’t get to participate. You can register by accessing your online account. This is basically free money, so be sure to register.

Chase Freedom Cards

If you want to get into the cash back action then take a look at these Chase Freedom Cards. Each card give 5% back in the rotating categories and even have a nice cash back bonus for new cardmembers. There are two versions of each card – Visa and MasterCard.

Chase Lowers Spending Requirements To Earn 40,000 Points

It’s now a little bit easier to earn bonus points with the Chase Sapphire PreferredSM Card. Now, when you sign up for a new account you just have to spend $2,000 within your first 3 months (previously it was $3,000) and you’ll earn 40,000 bonus points. These points can be redeemed for $400 in statement credit or a flight that costs $500. Not a bad deal!

Beyond the sign up bonus, the card has a number of other great benefits like earning double points and no annual fee for the first year. The annual fee is normally $95, but the offer waives this for the first year. Another cool little fact is you after your first year of membership you will have the option to convert the card to the Chase Sapphire Card which does not carry an annual fee. This will allow you to take advantage of the bonus offer and still miss out on the annual fee down the road. Chase Freedom® Cash Back

The Chase Freedom® Visa – $100 Bonus Cash Back is one of the most popular cards out there and for good reason. First, the card offers a nice $100 cash back bonus once you spend just $500 bucks in 3 months. That breaks down to just $166 per month which most of could hit just in our gas purchases. The card also gives 15 months and 15 months. If you plan on making a big purchase and need some extra time paying it off, or if you need a nice balance transfer card this is a perfect choice.

If prefer MasterCard then you can go for the MasterCard version. The Chase Freedom® MasterCard offers the same great perks, it’s just in the form of a MasterCard. Both cards also allow you to earn 5% cash back in rotating categories and you always get to earn 1% on all your other purchases. Marriott Adds More Travel Perks

Marriott and Chase have recently added another perk to the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card. They’ve made the offer slightly better by adding Trip Cancellation and Trip Delay Insurance to their offer. This card was already an ideal choice for those who travel abroad because of the no foreign transaction fees. Now, the offer is even more appealing for those seeking a travel rewards card because of the two newly added perks. Let’s take a look at the details:

  • Trip Cancellation Insurance – With trip cancellation insurance you will be reimbursed for a non-refundable ticket due to covered emergencies and cancellations as long as you purchased the ticket with your Marriott card.
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement – This will cover you if you have out of pocket expenses while being delayed. If your trip is delayed for more than 12 hours, reasonable expenses like meals and lodging will be covered.

Since this card is a Visa Signature card you also get a handful of other travel perks which we have listed below.

  • Travel Accident Insurance – This perks is a common carrier insurance which means that if you book your tickets (airline, cruise etc) with this card, you will be covered for accidental death or injuries to and from the trip to your port of departure. The minimum coverage starts at $250,000.
  • Lost Luggage Insurance – If you lose your baggage then you are covered for up to $3,000 dollars.
  • Emergency Travel and Medical Services – With this service you will be provided with medical assistance, legal referrals, translation services etc. It’s a free referral service provided by Visa, but if you actually use one of the services then you pay for it.
  • Car Rental Insurance – This perks applies to both domestic and international rentals. For domestic rentals, the collision and theft insurance kicks in when you pay for your car rental with the card. The coverage is secondary (after your primary auto insurance) and will cover things like deductibles and other areas which your primary auto coverage is unable to cover. For international rentals, the coverage is primary if your auto insurance does not cover overseas driving. Countries like Israel, Ireland and Jamaica are not covered.

70,000 Bonus Points and No Annual Fee

How does a nice bonus of 70k sound? This is the deal that is going on right now with the Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card. New cardmembers are awarded this after making a first purchase. This is enough for at least one night stay and maybe more depending on the hotel tier. Let’s dig into the details!

This offer is going on until July 25, 2012 which is perfect timing for any summer trips you might have planned. The rules are simple – apply before 7/25, make a first purchase and then get your 70,000 big ones. In addition, this offer also comes with the added bonus of no annual fee for the first year. That’s a savings of $395!

Amex Prepaid Offering $25 Gift Card Bonus

If you’re in the market for a prepaid card then consider the American Express® Prepaid Card. The card offers a low fee structure, plus a $25 gift card bonus. The combination of these two features make this offer very attractive and a tough competitor in the prepaid market. The $25 bonus gift card offer expires at the end of the month so let’s take a look.

Until June 30, 2012, Amex is giving away a $25 gift card when you get an American Express® Prepaid Card and load $200 or more onto the card at the time of order. With the middle of June approaching quickly you have to act fast if you want the gift card. If interested, you can apply online by completing an online application. When applying for the card be prepared to provide a routing number and account number so you can transfer funds to the card to qualify. Here’s a recap:

This is a prepaid card, not a credit card. However, cardmember get some of the same great benefits that all Amex users are accustom to like Roadside Assistance, Fraud protection, 24 hour customer service and Discounts and special offers. These type of benefits certainly set this card apart from other prepaid cards. The other thing that sets this card apart is the low fee structure the card offers. There are no fees to get the card, load the card, or use the card. ThankYou® Members Get 500 Bonus Points


If you’re dreaming of a beach vacation then now’s the time to book your trip using your Citi card. For a limited time ThankYou® members get 500 ThankYou Points just for booking a hotel through the Citi online Travel Center. When you book your hotel stay through the Travel Center then you will earn 500 bonus points as long as your booked from May 22 – July 21, 2012. This is perfect timing for your summer plans. Here’s what’s listed in the fine print:

Citi ThankYou(SM) Preferred Rewards Card – $250 in Gift Cards

I like the Citi ThankYou(SM) Preferred Rewards Card – $250 in Gift Cards because it gives a nice size bonus offer after you spend $2,000 within the first 3 months of opening the account. This is one of the highest gift card offers out there. Also, you earn 1 point for every $1 you spend on all purchases.

Also, check out the Citi ThankYouSM Preferred Card – $150 in Gift Cards which gives $150 in gift cards, but allows you to earn 5 points per $1 for the first 12 moths.

Citi Forward® Card

The Citi Forward® Card has always been one of my favorite offers. This too has a gift card bonus of $100 when you redeem the 10,000 bonus ThankYou® Points you get after you make $650 in purchases and sign up for paperless statements within the first 3 months. When it comes to earning rewards it gives 5 points for every $1 spent at restaurants and on books, movies and music. 1 point for every $1 you spend on all other purchases. This card also offers 0% for 7 months*.

Students can get into the action with the Citi Forward® Card for College Students which rewards you with points just for being a good cardholder.
