Bringing the green movement into the credit card industry, Discover has launched a biodegradable card made of biodegradable plastic. The Biodegradable Discover® More Card is made of biodegradable PVC, which allows almost all of the card’s plastic to be safely absorbed when exposed to landfill conditions. The card plastic will begin to break down in water, soil, or compost.
Discover claims that the card will fully degrade within five years and leave no toxic residue when it degrades. The biodegradable card can be identified by the biodegradable symbol that will be visible on the back of the card.
Discover launched their biodegradable credit card “in response to greater consumer interest in green products, and we hope this will appeal to those interested in living a greener life,” Discover publicist Laura Ingiss wrote in an email.
The biodegradable cards currently are available in standard designs only to Discover More, Motiva, Open Road and new card members.
