Jolie, here’s what Chase says: “Get 5% Cash Back offers in popular rotating categories like gas, groceries, airlines, home improvement and many more.” Note that the top tier cash back has been increased from 3% to 5%. As for which categories are currently eligible for the 5% cash back, you’ll need to contact Chase. For whatever reason, this information is not readily available on the Chase website.

Aly, the cash back rewards are category based, so as long as you use the card in the right category, it doesn’t matter what store you shop at. For example, if they are offering a special cash back on gas, it applies to all gas stations.

Can anyone tell me what companies the Chase Freedom cash back offers are for? It tells categories but this card won’t be useful to me unless I would shop at these stores. Thanks in advance.

Shelley, I carry both the Discover More Card and the Chase Freedom. They are two of the best cards available in my opinion. It's true that Discover pays 5% on select categories that rotate each quarter, but on other categories it pays just 0.25% to begin with. You can build up to 1% on these other categories, but only after your total annual purchases exceed $3,000. The Chase Freedom pays 1% from the start. Also, the Freedom cards offers 0% on purchases for up to 12 months; the Discover Card is just 6 months. And finally, the Chase Freedom pays a $50 bonus after the first purchase. So it's a close call on these two cards, and that's why I use both of them.

OK, the chase 3% cash back caught my attention, but I must tell you it's not the best thing out there. Discover card has a better deal. You get 1% cash back on everyday purchases, just like Chase. But instead of the quarterly 3% cash back on different categories, discover card gives you 5%. They rotate categories every 3 months. I am suprised that you are saying this is the best thing out there. You also get higher percentages in cash back when you make purchases online. In comparison, Discover beats chase by 2%. Same rules, you have to be in good standing with them in order to receive your bonus. But for those who use the credit card like you would a debit card and pay your balances in full each month, you can rack up a nice chunck of change.
