Low interest credit cards come in three flavors: (1) cards that offer 0% on balance transfers, (2) cards that offer 0% on purchases, and (3) cards that offer a low regular APR on everyday purchases. And the best credit cards offer two or even all three features.
Low Interest on Balance Transfers
Low interest rates on balance transfers typically involve 0% for 6 to 12 months on all transferred balances. These offers charge a balance transfer fee, generally ranging from 3% to 5% of the amount transferred. The best deals available today are 0% for 12 months with a 3% balance transfer fee. This type of low interest card is ideal for those with existing credit card balances subject to high interest rates.
Low Interest on Purchases
Several credit card offers come with a 0% introductory rate on purchases. With these cards, you won’t pay any interest on your purchase balance as long as the introductory rate remains in effect. Most cards today that offer this feature come with 0% on purchases for either 6 or 12 months. Unlike a balance transfer, 0% introductory rates on purchases do not involve transfer fees, so you truly pay no interest during the introductory period. You will be required to make a minimum payment on the card each month, but the payment will go entirely toward paying down the principal. This type of low interest card is ideal for those looking to charge purchases and carry a balance for a short period of time without paying any interest.
Low Regular APR
Finally, some card offers come with a standard APR on purchases that is low. While there is no official definition of “low interest,” today low interest rates for credit cards typically means a regular APR in the 11% to 15% range. Many low interest rate cards combine this feature with a 0% introductory rate, so you can get the best of both worlds.
